Interim Main Battle Tank Unveiled As Future European Tank Project Slips

KNDS unveiled the CAPINT (CAPacité INTérmédiaire) main battle tank at Eurosatory on June 15, offered to France as an interim replacement for the Leclerc fleet ahead of the much-delayed Franco-German Main Ground Combat System. The design combines a French uncrewed turret and 120mm ASCALON smoothbore gun on a German Leopard 2 hull, with the turret pre-engineered to accept a 140mm cannon in future. Three crew sit in an armored citadel at the front of the hull, protected by passive composite armor, reactive plates, and a KNDS-developed active protection system distributed around the turret and hull.

The Read: The CAPINT lands in the middle of a fragmenting European tank landscape. The MGCS, launched in 2017 as the joint Franco-German answer, is now expected in service in the mid-2040s, and a German government spokesperson has separately questioned whether a joint tank will be built at all, with the program possibly narrowing to "platform-independent" technologies. Germany is already working on its own interim solution, the Leopard 3 (also designated Leopard 2AX), and roughly a dozen European nations are pursuing the parallel MARTE program for the post-2040 timeframe. Three of the new tanks shown or referenced at Eurosatory this week, CAPINT, Leopard 3, and the Leonardo-Rheinmetall New Main Battle Tank concept, all start from the Leopard 2 hull.

Black Recon ‘microdrone’ system unveiled by Teledyne FLIR \\ Breaking Defense

Teledyne FLIR Defense flew Black Recon publicly for the first time at Eurosatory on June 15, demonstrating an autonomous-launch micro-drone system designed to keep three small ISR aircraft cycling out of a single vehicle-mounted container. Each drone weighs under 550 g (1.2 lb), runs up to an hour, hits about 88 km/h (55 mph), and carries five cameras spanning colour and thermal imaging; the 68 × 65 × 45 cm container is built for IFV-class platforms such as the CV90 and meets MIL-STD-810H environmental standards. The architectural shift is the autonomous launch, recovery, and recharge cycle: drones can fly simultaneously for coordinated coverage or rotate in relieve-and-replace cadence to sustain continuous ISR without exposing the crew or stopping the vehicle.
