Rheinmetall unveiled the GMF 140, a 140-metre (459-ft), 6,000-tonne-plus guided-missile frigate positioned as its first prime-contractor bid for a major surface combatant. The design carries 64 strike-length Mk 41 vertical launch cells, roughly double the loadout of a Constellation-class or an FDI, and is built around the AEGIS combat system with US-sourced radar options, a 127mm (5-in) Mk 45 main gun, SeaRAM close-in weapons, and provision for laser air defence. Crew complement is a core 90 with room for 35 more, the top speed is 30 knots, and the ship is designed around a wave-piercing bow reminiscent of the French FDI. Rheinmetall says it will offer the design initially as part of a procurement project in North America before pursuing other allied navies.

The Read: The GMF 140 announcement is the visible move in a larger industrial pivot after Rheinmetall lost its home market. Germany cancelled the F126 program on 24 June and ordered up to eight TKMS MEKO A-200-based F128 frigates instead, worth €6.3 billion for four hulls with a €5.3 billion option, after rejecting a joint NVL and Rheinmetall bid to take over as prime at roughly €15.2 billion; TKMS then took a second prestige win in July as Ottawa's preferred supplier for the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project. Rheinmetall's response is to use the vertical integration it paid for (Blohm+Voss, Peene-Werft, Norderwerft, and Neue Jadewerft, all part of the NVL takeover completed on 1 March) to open a front in a North American market that has room for it: the US Navy cancelled the Constellation class last year, its FF(X) programme landed on a smaller National Security Cutter derivative, and the capability gap between FF(X) and the Arleigh Burke is precisely where the GMF 140 is sized to sit.

Lockheed Martin Skunk Works and the US Air Force Test Pilot School announced on August 4 that an AI agent aboard the X-62 VISTA had completed 27 tactical intercepts of a T-38 target across an eight-sortie campaign at Edwards Air Force Base, closing the loop between an operational passive sensor and autonomous maneuver for the first time on the aircraft. Previous X-62 AI campaigns relied largely on simulated or injected target data; this series ran on live feeds from a Legion Pod carrying the IRST21 passive infrared sensor, which detects targets by heat signature without emitting energy. Ron Fehlen, VP and general manager at Skunk Works, framed the sensor-to-action loop closure as the operational data environment crews would actually see, and said the company's "Supermassive" agent generation capability took the AI from integration to ground testing in about three months.
