Raytheon and CET Successfully Test New Low-Cost Hadalus UUV for U.S. Navy

Raytheon and Composite Energy Technologies announced on August 10 that they had successfully demonstrated the submerged launch capability of HADALUS, a new long-endurance uncrewed undersea vehicle, during a US Navy exercise on a Navy undersea test range. Raytheon flagged the demonstration as the first time the Navy has seen the integrated capability operating in the water. HADALUS is a 34-foot (10.4 m) UUV with a six-foot (1.8 m) cross section, a stated endurance of more than 2,000 nautical miles (3,700 km), and a free-flooded all-carbon-fiber exoskeleton designed to cost roughly one-third to one-fifth as much as comparable long-endurance vehicles. Raytheon and CET went from conceptual sketch to prototype demonstrated in water in less than 18 months, self-funding the design, launcher integration, sonar, electronics, and full-system testing. The program is aimed at a single autonomous undersea platform able to perform detect, reacquire, and engage functions in one mission.

What HADALUS adds is strike inside a mid-sized attritable body: detect, reacquire, and engage integrated into one long-endurance mission, at one-third to one-fifth the cost of comparable platforms.

Navy Is Getting A Unique Virginia Class Seabed Espionage Submarine \\ TWZ

The US Navy has confirmed to TWZ that one of two Block V Virginia class submarines built without the Virginia Payload Module will be a Subsea and Seabed Warfare focused platform, a one-off variant designed for highly specialized intelligence and sabotage missions on the seafloor. The disclosure narrows an ambiguity from the Navy's August 3 announcement that recategorized VPM-equipped Block V and Block VI Virginias as guided missile submarines (SSGNs) and identified two, rather than one, non-VPM Block V boats. The first non-VPM boat is the future USS Oklahoma (SSN-802); the SSW variant will be one of the ten Block V boats currently named USS Barb, Tang, Wahoo, Silversides, John H. Dalton, Long Island, San Francisco, Miami, Baltimore, and Atlanta. The SSW design repurposes the VPM hull section for seabed warfare equipment rather than missile tubes and, per General Dynamics Electric Boat renderings, adds a pronounced bulge beneath the center of the hull, in line with the multi-mission platform inheritance from USS Jimmy Carter's 100-foot extension that houses ROV/UUV launch and recovery, a reconfigurable command and control room, and auxiliary thrusters for holding station on the seafloor.
