General Atomics released the first rendering of its Wildfire drone on September 9, its bid for the US Air Force's Massed Modular Aircraft (MMA) program to replace the MQ-9A Reaper. The concept is a pusher-prop medium-altitude, long-endurance design with clear MQ-9 DNA in its planform, chin sensor turret, and rear blade antenna, but notably lacks the Reaper's distinctive SATCOM hump, implying a smaller, lower-cost SATCOM terminal, potentially tied to Starshield, and greater semi-autonomous control. The rendering shows Wildfire armed with four Joint Strike Missiles, and General Atomics is claiming the design targets a 10,000-nautical-mile ferry range, four LRASMs, and semi-autonomous swarm control of up to 100 aircraft. Defense Innovation Unit and the Air Force opened the MMA solicitation on July 7 targeting a $10 million air-vehicle unit cost against a Reaper current price of $30-50 million fully equipped, with 21-month prototype flight testing from contract award, initial operational capability in 2031, and a total planned buy of roughly 180 aircraft.

The Read: The urgency behind Wildfire is a fleet math the Air Force has never publicly acknowledged this openly. The MQ-9A fleet has shrunk from 231 aircraft at the start of FY25 to 165 at the start of FY26 to roughly 135 by May, and the Washington Post reported in August that at least 45 Reapers, roughly a quarter of the fleet, have been lost in the ongoing conflict with Iran. MQ-9A production shut down in 2025, and USAF Chief Modernization Officer Lt. Gen. Christopher Niemi conceded last week that scaling MQ-9B SkyGuardian purchases as a bridge is unrealistic under current budgets. Wildfire's design bet is that MQ-9 lineage plus a cheaper SATCOM and payload architecture can hit the $10 million air-vehicle target while retaining Reaper-class ISR and strike capability, closing the door on multiple competitors racing for the same MMA slot.

Ukrainian manufacturer Ukrspecsystems publicly identified itself as the maker of the RAM-2X strike drone at the MSPO defence exhibition in Poland on September 8, ending several years of security-driven silence around a system it says has been fully operational since 2024 and built in the tens of thousands. RAM-2X is an X-winged loitering munition with a range of up to 180 km (112 mi), endurance over two hours, a 2.7 or 3.5 kg (5.9 or 7.7 lb) explosively formed penetrator warhead, and a stack that includes automatic target lock and tracking, AI-based object recognition trained on years of Ukrainian reconnaissance imagery, optical navigation for GPS-denied environments, and multiple radio bands plus Starlink for control links. The company positions RAM-2X inside a broader reconnaissance-strike architecture, most visibly its "Killer Duo" pairing with the SHARK-M ISR UAV, which handles persistent surveillance, target designation, and communications relay in heavily contested electronic-warfare conditions. Ukrspecsystems now employs over 4,000 staff, produces more than 1,500 drones per month, and iterates hardware every three weeks and software every six.
